OPPOSITION

From Earth’s standpoint a planet is at opposition when it is directly opposite in the sky from the Sun. This means the planet is visible all night long rising at sunset, crossing the meridian near midnight and setting at sunrise. It also means at near this point in its orbit the planet is closest to the Earth and thus appears largest and brightest for this year.
