MARE

Mare (Maria pl.) is the Latin word for sea and is used in naming the large dark areas of the lunar surface. The areas are volcanic plains formed when magma filled ancient impact sites and are composed primarily of basalt. Ancient astronomers mistook the flat areas as actual bodies of water.
